Concert Picks: Shadow Shadow Shade, Saint Motel, Taken By Trees…
By Lindsey DardenAh, Valentine’s Day weekend, the purveyor of the following options: (1) diving into a tub of ice cream; (2) hiding under the covers; or (3) falling into a roses-dinner-diamonds(!)-teddy bear trap that Hallmark insists is the norm. What’s that? You’re looking for more options? We thought you’d never ask:
- Shadow Shadow Shade | Friday, February 12 | 8:30 pm | 21 + | $8 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The artists formerly known as Afternoons, are apparently on the verge of releasing a new EP. Of course we don’t know the release date; music thrives off of the elongated tease. However, after sampling what’s available on their MySpace, we’re definitely getting a Queen-slash-David Bowie-slash-Magnetic Fields vibe. Believe us when we say that we are giggling with anticipation. With Twilight Sleep and Marvelous Toy – Buy Tickets
- Indobox | Friday, February 12 | 10:30 pm | 21+ | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | We love drawing bands’ musical likenesses to acts before their time. It shows that someone’s been paying attention. If there really isn’t much new under the sun, might as well find some way to inconspicuously bend our ear. The rock foursome from Allston, Mass., emulates anyone from The Ramones to The BeeGees – often in the same song, therefore giving an OK to sway, baby, sway to the beautiful sound. - Saint Motel | Saturday, February 13 | 7:00 pm | All Ages | $11.50 | The Roxy, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Saint Motel has more than kicked our posteriors before, so of course we’d advocate attending any and all their shows short of stalking. What’s so special about this show is the theme of Zombie Prom. Why Zombie Prom, you ask? Well, Valentine’s Day is about love and its emotional variants (ie passion). If you’re not familiar with the passion of a zombie, then you might want to re-watch 28 Days Later. With Young The Giant, Chasing Kings and Links – Buy Tickets
- Taken By Trees | Saturday, February 13 | 7:30 pm | 21+ | $12 | Union Hall, New York, NY – Map | Currently on tour in promotion of her sophomore album, East of Eden, Victoria Bergsland – solo performer and former lead vocalist for Swedish pop group The Concretes – lays the most vulnerable (and therefore strength-inspiring) components of her serene, all-inclusive sound on the table. With White Hinterland – for ticket information, call (718) 638-4400.
- The Dirty Rooks | Sunday, February 14 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $10-$12 | Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL – Map | “Booze rock”… the kind of rock music you listen to with friends, old or made new with said booze? Interesting take. More than a few minutes of streaming will inspire that feeling – a positive one punctuated with country elements and much, much soul. With Jon Langford and The Delta Routine – Buy Tickets
