Frank Zappa’s Movie: The Freak Out List
By Anet Hovhanesian
Not many people can list composer, electric guitarist, record producer AND film director on their resume, but of course Frank Zappa wasn’t like many people. The late universal performer had his hand in a little bit of everything when it came to the entertainment industry.
When he started out, he published a list of his most important artistic influences on the inside cover of his debut album, which in turn became a road map of his career. This list has been turned into a film, The Freak Out List.
This film explores the musical roots of Zappa by putting The Freak Out List under the microscope and tracing its lineage from the most pivotal names to the recordings and performances of the man himself. The film includes exclusive interviews with The Mothers Of Invention’s Ian Underwood, Don Preston and George Duke, plus 1950′s Doo Wop legends The Cadillacs.
There will also be contributions from Zappa biographers Ben Watson and Greg Russo, Edgar Varese biographer Alan Clayson, experimental modern music historian Professor David Nicholls, soul and R’n'B expert Robert Pruter and many others. The film will be available for purchase when it’s released on DVD on April 20th.
