RollingStones TW 3 2 10 Rolling Stones To Re Release Exile With New Tracks, Documentary

If the 18-song original wasn’t enough for you, the Rolling Stones will be tossing ten more Exile on Main Street tunes your way on May 18th: the classic 1972 double album, one of the greatest rock records of all time, is getting the deluxe reissue treatment with a host of unearthed leftovers, alternate takes, and a new making-of-the-album documentary film.

According to Rolling Stone, the newly released tracks – including “Plundered My Soul,” “Dancing in the Light,” and “Following the River” – were recently unearthed from the Stones’ vaults by frontman and chicken-dancer Mick Jagger, who also added (God help us) new percussion and vocals to some of the tracks, while Keith Richards overdubbed a few new guitar lines.  I suppose we should just be thankful that the Glimmer Twins didn’t meddle with the album’s infamous, submerged-basement mix, with Jagger adding dance-pop loops and over-enunciating every lyric into mannered oblivion, as has been the case with the last 95 or so Stones records.

Also included in the deluxe edition of the reissue will be Stones in Exile, a film by Stephen Kijak which documents the making of the album, along with a vinyl copy of Exile and a 50-page collector’s book.  Not included?  The $18 dollars and hour of your life taken by their last album.

What do you think?  What other classic albums deserve the reissue treatment?

Certainly could be worthwhile, as Exile is truly a great rock album. Not sure that it needs overdubbing or remastering, as it is great the way it is…have Phish's 2009 Halloween concert where they played Exile from start to finish, and while it is a cool performance, it simply doesn't compare to the original Exile. Some great things don't require tweaking. However, I must say that I am interested to hear the additional 10 tracks if they were recorded in the same sessions.
