If ABBA and the Spice Girls can get their own Broadway musical, that’s more than enough reason for a Ray Charles musical. As a staple and innovator for Soul music, Ray Charles has grabbed our hearts through his various hit songs such as “Georgia On My Mind” and “Hit The Road Jack” but this theatrical piece on the musician’s life is asking us to unchain his heart.

Unchain My Heart, the musical celebrating Ray Charles’ life, is coming to Broadway this November and according to the Associated Press, preview performances start as early as October 8.

The AP also reports that Unchain My Heart will be produced by Stuart Benjamin, who also produced smash hit film, Ray, starring Jamie Foxx (and most likely the beginning of “Gold Digger” for Kanye West). Benjamin worked with Charles for a good 15 years during the singer’s lifetime and is bringing in director, Sheldon Epps, to help him flesh out the show based on a book by Suzan-Lori Parks.

Although an earlier version of the show titled “Ray Charles Live” (a bit ironic for a tribute play, isn’t it?) was performed in Pasadena during early 2007, the first official opening of Unchain My Heart will take place on November 7.

Do you plan on seeing Unchain My Heart when it gets big on Broadway?
