Miley Cyrus Somehow Top Concert Draw Of 2010

AP is reporting that the concert website Pollstar has updated its weekly report of the Top 20 highest-grossing concert acts in North America in 2010 and… oh, it’s bad.  Maybe not entirely unexpected, but still – 2009’s top 20 list at least had U2 and Bruce Springsteen at its #1 and #2 spots before being padded out by Britney Spears, The Jonas Brothers, Dave Matthews Band and Nickelback.  But 2010, on the other hand? Oh my…

Unsurprisingly, mainstream pop acts dominate, with Nick Jonas taking the 18th spot with $130,660 in ticket sales, the American Idol “rock” of Daughtry pulled in $160,201 at #15, Lady Gaga took the 6th spot with $544,046, and John Mayer came in at #5 with $548,708.

The big shockers? Ventriloquist and “comedian” Jeff Dunham earned $362,357 in 2010, placing ninth on the list. I’ll repeat that – in the midst of a near-crippling recession, we paid nearly $400,000 to see a sub-Jay Leno humorist play with puppets.

Even worse however, is the name that graces the top of the list. Having earned a whopping $1,156,010 in ticket sales in 2010 (with an average ticket price of $68.84) – and we’re still only in the first quarter of the year. That name… is Miley Cyrus. You insert your own harbinger of the Apocalypse/ Billy Ray Cyrus/ Hannah Montana joke here, I’m too busy filling out a U.K. citizenship request.
