MTV reports that members of Big Star, R.E.M., She & Him, the Posies, and X are joining together Saturday night at the South By Southwest Music Festival to honor Alex Chilton, the Big Star/ Box Tops singer and guitarist who died of a heart attack on Wednesday. He was 59.
Chilton was scheduled to front Big Star during a SXSW performance on Saturday night at Antone’s. Now, the occasion will be transformed from a simple rock concert to a howling rock ‘n roll elegy: the remainder of Big Star will be joined by Mike Mills of R.E.M., M. Ward of She & Him, John Doe of X, and many others for a live performance of Chilton’s music and a tribute to his legacy.
Original Big Star drummer Jody Stephens recently spoke to Billboard about the tribute performance:
“Certainly where Alex and I connected over the years was through music, either in the studio or onstage, so I think that’s a great way for us all to tip our hats to Alex and celebrate his life.”
For those readers who happen to be in Austin this weekend, I highly suggest you get in line early for this one—like Chilton’s indelible music, it’s not something you should miss.
What do you think of the tribute show lineup?
I find this information very useful and it has considerably saved my time.thanks
I agree. They way the 3 Door Down music tribute was put, my eyes started to water from emotion. And I rarely get watery eyes. Very well done music tribute. louis vuitton handbags
Saw it, it was awesome to say the least!
is not every day we see something like ... should be very goodqui!
imagine an already excellent show ...
The concerts quickly took up a life of their own on the ‘net, via mp3s and commentary, so it seems right the band would circle back around and release a sparkling edition of the warm-up gigs. “Live At The Olympia” offers a chance to hear those songs from Accelerate at their earliest stages of development, plus you get all the classic tunes you know and love.
Yes it is, "SXSW performance on Saturday night at Antone’s. " I believe Antone's is a club down there.
