MGMT To Rework Some Hits For Live Shows
By Jeffrey Hyatt
The spirit of rock legend Freddie Mercury will be front and center when MGMT hit the road for their upcoming stretch of live shows.
According to a story on xfm, MGMT – aka the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based pop/rock duo of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser – plan to pay tribute to the legendary rock band Queen by tweaking some of their hits in a very Queen-ish style.
“I don’t think we’re gonna be playing ‘Kids’ that much, while some of those songs will be played differently, as we’d originally intended them to sound with a full band,” VanWyngarden told AOL.
Talking about performing a song like “Electric Feel” on the tour, VanWyngarden said they changed it quite a bit – with a more ‘controlled, precise sound to it.’
“I’d even say it’s taken a prog rock direction,” he added, “sort of like 1980s Queen style maybe.”
And there is nothing wrong with ’80s style Queen, people.
MGMT’s next album, Congratulations, is due to be released on April 13. Of course, the duo’s sophomore album leaked on the Internet – but that’s cool. Instead of blowing a fuse, the guys decided to stream the album for free on the official website.
“Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us,” the band said in statement on the site.
Among the upcoming shows, MGMT joins Weezer as co-headliners for the 2010 Bamboozle Festival, set for May 1-2 at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, NJ.
