Tis the season for awesome reunions, fa-ra-la-la-la, la-la-la-la… If Sunny Day Real Estate or Pavement weren’t enough to make you scream and shout, maybe a new album by the legendary Sacramento Alt-Rock band Far will. With well over a decade of silence, Jonah, Shaun, John and Chris finally decided to plug in all their gear and began making music again as a band, and the result is their new album At Night We Live, in stores now via Ferret Records.

Hitting the stage around 10:30PM on a Friday night, Far jolted a nearly sold out crowd awake at the Troubadour opening with “Fight Song #16,233,241,” which, along with a slew of other classic and new-comer-tracks-alike, made for an incredibly close and intimate show. Other new songs included were “At Night We Live,” which was written about and dedicated to close personal friend, Chi Cheng of Deftones, who is currently in a semi-conscious state after being in a tragic car accident several years ago.

The mood definitely became somber as Jonah softly sang this song, nearly cracking his vocals due to the emotions surrounding the context of it but as heart-aching as the song was, it didn’t set a sad tone for the rest of the show. Other keepers that night included “Seasick” off their 1995 album Tin Cans With Strings To You and “Bury White” from Water & Solutions, which is arguably one of the best Alternative Rock albums to come out of the 90’s.

While the energy wasn’t quite as intense in regards to the last time I saw Far at the Troubadour, the crowd was very much alive and active, singing along to all the right parts, moving their hips to all the right beats, and sipping their drinks between every pause between songs. Planted near the back of the venue, I was able to catch all the smiles and cheers soaring from the crowd to the band, and the response from Far was nothing short of greatness.
