Because they are such pillars of artistic integrity and originality, you may remember that Brit-rockers Coldplay originally rejected a request from the television show Glee to have their music used on the singing and dancing program.  However, after producers announced that Lady Gaga and Madonna had both opened their respective catalogs to the Fox hit, it seems that the British hitmakers have had a change of heart – Billboard recently reported that Coldplay has opened their entire catalog to Glee.

While the move seems wholly contradictory, when one considers that the band is recording a new record, and that a Coldplay-themed episode of Glee airing around the same time of that album’s release would be something of a marketing coup, well, there you go.

Spinner reports that the band is currently tucked away in Budapest, working with produced Brian Eno on their follow up to their 2008 hit, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (you know, the one with the pretentious faux military garb):

“Coldplay promise that the songs aren’t necessarily done yet, but are close to completion and, more importantly, they’re ‘killer.’ They go on to describe their current songwriting methodology as existing in two phases. The first is what Eno describes as the ‘screwdriver work,’ where the group deliberates over the “perfect arrangement.”

The second phase is what they’re calling the ‘happy accidents” phase.‘  ‘Sometimes, the thing that ignites a tune appears to come completely out of nowhere — and you’d need to do a lot of retracing of steps just to work out exactly who triggered it,’ says the blog post [on Coldplay’s website]. ‘It could be as simple as someone playing a part with the wrong sound in error, or it could be Will noodling distractedly on his drum machine and Chris jumping on it and putting it under the verse of a song from another day.’”

No word yet on when the album will see the light of day, but don’t be surprised if it’s around the same time you start seeing/ hearing multi-vocal glee-club covers of “Yellow” airing on Fox.

What do you think of Coldplay lending their tunes to Glee?
