MTV reports that Eminem has done some maturing in the past few years out of the public eye (and ears).  In a New York Times Magazine interview promoting his new record, Recovery, Marshall Mathers admits that he’s discovered a newfound clarity with sobriety, and that, for now anyway, his ‘Slim Shady’ alter-ego is something of the past.

“Shady still exists. But I don’t think the subjects on this record call for, you know, bringing the chainsaws and axes out and murder[ing] everyone… There was so much stuff like that off the last record that I felt like I was starting to run it into the ground. I think consciously I went in a different direction with this record.”

Even further, when pressed about his opinion on gay marriage – Em has famously railed against homosexuality in his music (but, hey, he sang with Elton John that one time, so he’s cool, right?) – the rapper let loose with this stunner concerning how he would vote on an amendment allowing gay marriage in his native Michigan:

“Yes… I think if two people love each other, then what the hell?… I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want.”

And with that, the heads of hundreds of thousands of adenoidal frat boys just exploded.

What do you think of Em’s newfound maturity?
