Mastadon Lends Impromptu Score To Jonah Hex
By Travis Woods
As we previously reported, Atlanta, Georgia heavy metal badasses Mastadon have teamed with the Oscar-nominated composer of The Hurt Locker and 3:10 to Yuma, Marco Beltrami, to create the soundtrack to the upcoming comic book adaptation Jonah Hex. And with film’s release just days away, the band has announced that they will release a six-song EP of their film score via Reprise Records.
Approached by the film’s director, Jimmy Hayward (who repeatedly listened to the band’s 2006 Blood Mountain while filming), Mastadon composed the film’s score rather uniquely – the band was sent scenes from the film, and they immediately began to ad lib and compose the music on the spot. Which, if the music turns out to be badass, will make the band seem even more inarguably cool; and if it sucks, well, hey – they composed this stuff on the spot. What d’ya expect?
Mastadon’s Jonah Hex score will be available via iTunes on June 29th featuring the songs “Death March,” “Clayton Boys,” “Indian Theme,” and “Train Assault,” along with two bonus tracks. Hey, even if Jonah Hex sucks – not that Megan Fox would ever, ever star in anything less than a film of cinematic excellence, right? – it sounds as if the music will be a veritable fest of ass-kickery.
What do you think of Mastadon helping to score Jonah Hex?
