Lou Reed Set To Join Gorillaz At Glastonbury

Update: Watch Lou Reed perform with Gorillaz at Glastonbury!
Who knows, maybe they’ll break out a Velvet Underground song or two. While that would be super awesome, though unlikely, it’s still going to be a treat to see Gorillaz joined by Lou Reed onstage during their Glastonbury set tomorrow night (June 25).
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s cartoon band will headline the festival’s Pyramid Stage, and the duo is expected to be visited onstage by not only Reed, but other Plastic Beach guest stars including Mos Def, Kano, Bashy, Snoop Dogg and Shaun Ryder.
“Lou Reed’s arriving and, fingers crossed, coming straight to rehearsal. And then we watch the game,” Albarn told Radio 4’s Front Row yesterday (June 23). “This morning I woke up and the first thing I felt a wave of anxiety about – is an audience that size going to respond to our songs? I don’t know.”
Reed has not performed with Gorillaz, but did add his vocals to the Plastic Beach track ’Some Kind Of Nature’.
Here’s hoping Bobby Womack and former Clash members Mick Jones and Paul Simonon will also be part of the big Gorillaz show. Jones and Simonon performed with Gorillaz back in April when they closed Coachella 2010.
The Fall’s Mark E Smith is expected to perform live with the band for the first time on “Glitter Freeze.” Snoop Dogg is playing his own set ahead of Gorillaz at Glastonbury and definitely should be penciled in play with the band onstage.
De La Soul, Farside, Gruff, Little Dragon and Rolf Harris are yet more names Albarn has said will be part of the show.
“We’ve got about 50 or 60 people at one point onstage,” said Albarn, who was called upon to step in and play this weekend’s festival after U2 pulled out of the event when singer Bono injured his back.
It’s the second year in a row that Albarn will have headlined Glastonbury, after Blur reformed last year and played the festival.
