alexxcalise Album Review: Alexx Calises In Avanti

One concerted head-to-toe look at Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Alexx Calise might inspire one to think that she fits the persona of rocker chic pretty well. With long, dark hair, lined eyes, ripped jeans, and sleeveless screen-tees at the ready, how could anyone think otherwise, at least initially? Living, working, and playing in and around a genre that prefers (if not expressly requires) such a look, it takes a brain and a heart to put something on the table that will actually serve as anything but cookie cutter.

She proves that her rock edge goes a lot further than looks alone. Her sophomore solo album, In Avanti, is comprised of a fresh, raw sound that is glittering with a perfectionist’s edge – the result of someone who knows what they’re doing, perhaps?

Music buffs will understand what is meant when it is said that Calise’s sound is a reminiscent of Our Lady Peace’s ventures away from idiosyncratic rock to more standard, albeit equally delicious pop rock. Interestingly, some of the intros on the album have a Tori Amos quality (think “Precious Things” from the album Little Earthquakes).  The female component is at times rather Evanescence, showstopping without the overwhelming operatic quality. Overall, it is edgy without pretense, with angst-filled lyrics and undeniable prowess to make an indelible impression.

There is an interest, love, and a slight concern over the fact that each song somewhat bears the quality of fitting well within a transitional scene/pivotal point in an episode of The Hills or The City. However, thinking of the demographic to which it appeals to – namely, the 16-35 crowd, possibly female (and perhaps their male friends/boyfriends?) – it makes sense. The mainstream quality doesn’t deter from Calise showcasing her vocal ability – for example, on the track “Get Used to It” – with the very slight help of swirling effects. And, effects or not, never does she skimp out on the range.

Taking it a 180-degree turn, on the track “Cry” is where we get a less-charged Alexx, working towards as light vulnerability, with the same edgy demeanor that crosses a lot of genres, with alternative rock and pop naturally being at the forefront. She really knows how to deliver an album that pushes as hard as the listener is willing to push back.
