Win Butler On Arcade Fire’s New Album: ‘A Mix Of Depeche Mode And Neil Young’
By Travis Woods
The Suburbs, the upcoming third album by Montreal’s Arcade Fire, is one of the most highly anticipated discs (yes, music still comes on those) of the year. And, according to Spin and Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler, it’s going to sound, well, weird.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Butler described the sound of the new record, and the pressure of fan expectation of their upcoming (and also highly anticipated) summer tour:
“It sounds like a mix of the Depeche Mode and Neil Young… That’s kind of a weird combo, and if it doesn’t sound weird then I think it’s a success.
“’We can’t really pretend that no one’s ever heard of us before,” Butler said, alluding to the interest in their tour. ‘It takes a little bit of getting used to knowing that the first warm-up show you ever play will be everywhere on the internet, and you kind of have to grow up in the public in a lot of ways. But it really feels like we’re at the point in this tour now where we’re playing really great and the new songs feel really vital.’”
The Suburbs will be released via Merge on August 3rd.
