Best New Music Video of the Week: Broken Social Scene
By Mary Kosearas
Time for our pick of favorite music video of the week! There are a lot of music videos that come out each week so it’s a good thing we’re here to judge! This week’s pick was chosen for the following…
- New appreciation for people that can edit video well: 10/10
- Canadian-edge: 8/10
- Pass on to your friends: 10/10
And the pick of the week is…
Broken Social Scene: Meet Me in the Basement
A large anti-G8 protest ignited this past June at the G20 Summit in Toronto. Demonstrations and protest took to the streets as world leaders gathered to discuss the global financial system and world economy. Much of the rebellion was captured on film, but none of it was edited as brilliantly as this week’s video. The protests were reasonably peaceful, but understandably passionate as the world tires from the economic stress.
This video is a response to those protests, and created by an anonymous fan of Broken Social Scene. Current events paired with a distracted generation overfed with information is flawlessly mashed-up to “Meet Me in the Basement” from their latest album, Forgiveness Rock Record. It makes you think, makes you wonder, and makes you very aware of the chaos that surrounds our everyday lives.
I feel comfortable saying that 2010 was a big year for Canada. Keep doing what you do, Toronto. We dig it.
