Last week, we reported Arcade Fire‘s plan to play a massive concert at Madison Square Garden. The best part about that bit of news is that when they play the place the second night, the entire show will be broadcast live for everyone on a special YouTube channel. Following in the footsteps of The National, this event is bound to be epic. However, we were missing one piece of information on Tuesday.

We had only speculated who could be the director of the webcast. Although we and many others guessed Spike Jonze and Jonathan Demme, it turns out to be none other than the director of Win Butler’s favorite film, Brazil – Terry Gilliam.

Terry Gilliam may be remembered as part of the famous comedy troupe, Monty Python, but he’s also directed the films, Brazil (as previously mentioned), 12 Monkeys and his latest work, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

According to the Associated Press, the Arcade Fire concert on August 5th is the kick off to a five-part online concert series called “Unstaged” and it will be launched by American Express.  So far, the rest of the roster includes John Legend and The Roots.

Arcade Fire is dramatic as can be (at least their first two albums were) but will this live event be as grand as The National’s which was directed by famous documentary filmmaker, D.A. Pennebaker, earlier in the year? We’ll just have to wait and see. The Suburbs does get better with every listen.

What do you think of Terry Gilliam directing the Arcade Fire webcast?
