The Rolling Stones Knock Down Retirement Rumors
By Travis Woods
The big news in England over the weekend came courtesy of the always wildly accurate United Kingdom newspaper the Sun: that the Rolling Stones, once the World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band, will be retiring in 2012 following a massive 2011 world tour. 2012 would mark the long-running band’s 50th anniversary, and would provide the band with a fitting end, seeing as they haven’t released a relevant album since 1981.
According to an (of course anonymous) source of the Sun’s:
“They’re likely to perform in stadiums. It’s almost certainly the last full-scale world tour… The band realize that age is creeping up on them. They want to bow out on top of their game, and not short-change their fans.”
Two things: I love the Stones, but the idea that age is only now just creeping up on the band, well… the source obviously never saw this. Also? Apparently, the Sun’s source was wrong, according to Entertainment Weekly:
“The report is bogus. ‘Not true,’ said the Stones’ rep when asked by EW if the band is planning to retire.”
Ok, ok—it would be kind of odd living in a Stones-less world, anyway. That said, I would kill all that I love for a cessation of all Aerosmith touring and music-recording. Seriously, Steve, Joe, Brad, Joey, that other guy with the hair—the charade’s gone on long enough. Let’s just all walk away and pretend it never happened, ok?
What do you think? When should the Stones retire?
