Kanye West Performs ‘Mama’s Boyfriend’ and Confirms Bon Iver Collaboration
By Seraphina L.
Kanye West will always be in the news. Even with all the hoopla that went down with his obnoxious Taylor Swift interruption, he and his ego had no problem climbing back up the charts and into the headlines. Proving he’s a better marketing strategist than M.I.A., the unveiling of each new song off of the upcoming album has already gotten generally positive reviews.
We may have been bombarded by his excessive updates since he has decided to take over Twitter. However, each step from an impromptu performance at the Facebook and Twitter headquarters to releasing a fresh cut with Beyoncé and Charlie Wilson to debuting yet another new song last night with John Legend and company has only boosted his presence online. Oh yeah, and that Bon Iver collab everyone has been talking about? It’s been confirmed.
According to Sound of the City (via Pitchfork), West joined John Legend and The Roots at a little intimate club in New York City last night. He performed hits such as the recent “Power,” “Good Life” and “American Boy” but he also debuted the song, “Mama’s Boyfriend” which you can watch below.
In regards to collaborations – which is never a bad for us – Lady Gaga and David Bowie may not be the only hot team-ups. Kanye West has indeed worked with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon according to a chat the rapper had with Rolling Stone (via Consequence of Sound). If you’re wondering how Vernon, a recluse who recorded a beautiful album out in the middle of the woods during winter, got together with one of hip hop’s biggest ego-maniac, here’s how it all went down: After hearing Vernon’s experiment with auto-tune on “Woods” which appears on the Blood Bank EP, West snatched the singer-songwriter up as fast as he could to get the sample.
“I called [Vernon] and we ended up becoming like really good friends, playing basketball together everyday, and going into the back studio and just record his parts. He’s similar to me, like where he just does shit just so people would be like, ‘Oh shit how did you do that? How did that happen?’ He’s just a really cool guy to be around.”
