Concert Picks: Jupiter One, Liz Pappademas, The Bellrays…
By Lindsey DardenThe nights just keep getting hotter, don’t they? Double entendre intended – and by that we mean musically. We’ve got some colorful acts lined up for you this weekend – the better for your rockin’ out, dancing, swaying from side to side pleasure. Check them out below.
- Jupiter One | Friday, August 20 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | New York-based indie rock (emphasis on rock) band Jupiter One is the bearer of a very eclectic sound… by the time we were on their second track (“Simple Stones”) they’d already ventured into the groove/funk genre – again, with much emphasis on rock. They’ve been in the game for a while – since 2003, to be precise – so it’s really no surprise that they’re consistently good. Is it too forward to refer to them as delicious with only knowing them for ten minutes? With Project Jenny, Project Jan and Motherfeather – for ticket information, call (212) 260-4700.
- Liz Pappademas and the Level | Friday, August 20 | 9:00 pm | $5 | Pehrspace, Los Angeles, CA – Map | “Bring back good art-pop!” Our yells must have been heard loud and clear through the window. We love a good story, a good painting, an intentional melodic swirling that creates landscapes and digs a tunnel for our innermost thoughts to tumble out of. Thanks a billion, Liz & Co., for the tripping keys, roundabout lyrics and welling orchestral components. With the auto-tune craze likely to last until 2012, it’s even more likely you’ll remain in a league of your own. With Carlee Hendrix & the Whole Earth Catalog – for more information, call (323) 483-7374.
- Kid Sister | Saturday, August 22 | 1:00 pm | Free w/ RSVP | Hideout (outside), Chicago, IL – Map | The Chicago native rapper/singer will bring sick beats and hard cuts to her hometown as part of Mad Decent Block Parties, with various other acts. She will conveniently be playing two more US dates until she heads overseas until early October. She really shows how it’s done – “it” being an at times vulnerable songstress vibe and hard girl ‘know-what-I-want’ attitude that keeps our hands up in the air. Get her while she’s hot. - RSVP here.
- The Bellrays | Saturday, August 22 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $8 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Sexy, soulful, and hard – that would be The Bellrays. They are seriously no joke. We’re actually floored. In fact, we’ll go one step further – they’re proof that when you think you’ve heard it all, you are (a) grossly mistaken, (b) a complete fool for thinking so, (c) a little too full of your musical tastes, and/or (d) all of the above. P.S. If you’re at Sunset Junction this weekend, keep your wristband on, as it will let you in for free. With Angus Khan and The Superbees – for more information, call (323) 661-4380.
- Electric Tickle Machine | Sunday, August 22 | 8:00 pm | Don Pedro, Brooklyn, NY – Map | To best learn the origins behind the name Electric Tickle Machine, feel free to check out their self-description via their official website (complete with NSFW album art). Somewhat flowery verbage aside, if that is the intention behind the experimental at-times-classic rock band (that being the admitting to society’s superficiality over quality and then some), then we can get behind it and therefore them. Not to mention that anyone with more than half a brain gets our juices flowing. It’s the little things. With Shark?, Weekends, Food Stamps, Lost Boy and more – for event information, call (718) 218-6914.
Well, those are our picks and we’re sticking to ‘em. Who’s on your To-See List this weekend?
