U2 fans in Europe catching the quartet on the latest leg of their 360 tour have been treated to a handful of new songs. The band played a slow-tempo number titled “Every Breaking Wave” in Helsinki on Saturday.

“Like every breaking wave on the shore, this is as far as I can reach,” Bono sang. He later told the crowd: “No one has heard that before — not even us.”

Rolling Stone notes that “Every Breaking Wave” was originally intended for for their most recent album, No Line on the Horizon. It was later decided that the song would be the first single for U2′s upcoming Songs of Ascent.

Aside from “Every Breaking Wave,” U2 has also played new songs “Return of the Sting Ray Guitar,” “North Star” and “Glastonbury” on the European leg of their 360 Tour.

Bono also told Rolling Stone the band has written enough material to complete four albums, so expect the band to debut a brand new song here and there throughout the tour. Bono said the music ranges from a “rock album” to a “club-sounding album.”

Looks like Bono spent his days recuperating from back surgery writing music – a lot of music.

The big issue now is how the band will release these 25-30 new songs. Bono has admitted to not being the type of ‘modern’ style band to release the music online, but perhaps they’ll embrace the beauty of new media for this latest chapter of creative output.

And while we’re on the subject of U2, the band has announced that Jay-Z will open for them on the Australian and New Zealand editions of their worldwide tour, which begins November 25th.
