It’s almost that time of year again. CMJ is just around the corner to swallow New York City whole and spit out the greatest up and coming bands to date. Austin may have SXSW in Spring but CMJ dominates every nook and cranny in NYC during the fall when the festival hits the Big Apple on October 19. It can get a bit chaotic with bands who bring their vans and find out there’s no where to park,  but that’s all part of the fun when bands and music fiends all gather together and run around to experience some new sounds.

Not only do we know that it will run from October 19 to October 23 but we also already know who they’ve invited to showcase their talents so far. The initial lineup is just after the jump! See if any of your favorite indie bands made the CMJ cut.

Some big names include DeVotchKa, Surfer Blood, The Drums, Ghostface Killah and more. However there are some really fresh artists already included as well such as Dominique Unique Young, Angus and Julia Stone and Langhorne Slim. Check them all out below!

Even at a glance, this isn’t band at all, but you have to remember that you can’t think of this list as an actual lineup. CMJ gets incredibly massive; this is just a tiny sample of more bands that will be announced. Then you have to think about all the bands who aren’t officially on the CMJ line up but will also be playing there anyway.  Remember last year’s official lineup? That’s quite a lot to wrap your head around when you take all the unofficial bands into account.

Keep checking back as we’ll be updating the lineup and, of course, recommending our must-see acts!

To find out more, you can currently go to the official CMJ website.

Are any of your favorite bands already in this lineup? Which other bands do you think should be playing CMJ this year?
