Last week, Katy Perry released her latest album Teenage Dream, which debuted at number one of the Billboard 200 chart. She knock summer mainstay Eminem down a peg with the disc that sold 192,000 copies. Granted that’s nothing compared to what Em or several other artists did their first week out the gate but it was good enough to claim the crown — for this week at least.

Following Perry was Fantasia Barrino’s third album Back to Me, which sold 117,000 copies. Both entries forced Eminem’s Recovery into the third spot, the lowest position its held since debuting on the chart 8 weeks ago. Did you read that correctly? We said, 8 WEEKS ago! Another new disc came from R&B singer Usher, who’s latest album Versus debuted at number 4 with 46,000 copies sold. Damn Usher, what happened to those record breaking numbers?

According to Entertainment Weekly, Perry’s debut was a bit underwhelming considering the airplay and number one status her singles “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls” have received. It also pales in comparison to Recovery’s first week of 741,000 copies, and hip hop rookie Drake whose debut album Thank Me Later moved 447,000 copies. Don’t believe the hype. All summer it felt like the media was shoving Perry down our throats, and it looks like people weren’t buying it, literally.

What do you think of last week’s album sales?
