Concert Picks: Ava Luna, The Delta Mirror, Destronauts…
By Lindsey Darden
So it’s the end of the summer and everyone’s left for the weekend except for you. And this is a bad thing why? The possibilities are endless – show-hop if you must. Get it out of your system. We’re here to help. We’ve got a slew of concerts for you to attend this holiday. Check out our picks below…
- Ava Luna | Friday, September 3 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $10 | Pianos, New York, NY – Map | The Brooklyn-based group dabbles in what made Jamiroquai more than the music of the moment, with their own smooth jazz and groove interpretations. They make the idea of new, fresh sound a reality and not just a pipe dream. “Seriously good” is a phrase not to be taken too lightly, and seriously good Ava Luna is. With Your Youth, Miniboone, Bermuda Bonnie and more – for ticket info, call (212) 505.3733 between 12pm and 8pm.
- The Delta Mirror | Friday, September 3 | 8:30 pm | 21+ |$8 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | We wouldn’t exactly say that the Los Angeles- based ambient alternative rock is taking a page from the book of Beck, but we appreciate the vibe nonetheless. Their sound takes care to roll around pleasantly back and forth within the confines of our soul, something which we’re surprised to have found recently. With Afghan Raiders and Healamonstar & Tarsier – Buy Tickets
- Destronauts | Saturday, September 4 | 7:30 pm | 21+ | $5 | Glasslands, New York, NY – Map | What’s really exciting about techno-pop duo Destronauts (aka songwriter Chadwick Shao and singer Mimi Eayrs) isn’t limited to their merging styles with deliciously electric beats. In understanding how everything starts from something small, we’re still surprised at their relative fan base. But it can’t be denied, from folk to classic rock, to hypnotic spoken-word Spanish interludes by Eayrs, there’s something really exciting about their style. This evening’s performances will include six (count ‘em, six) other bands: The Press, Teen Dream, Corbu, Madame Trash Heap and others. Come and get your money’s worth. For more information, call (718) 599-1450.
- Alexandra Bustamante | Saturday, September 4 | 9:00 pm | 21+ | $8 | Room 5, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Singer-songwriter Alexandra Bustamante seems to be in the business of making sure heartfelt musical ponderings of life and love go less the way of the glittery pop machine and more the way of the mic and lone spotlight. Keep indulging our ever-need for local talent with that alternating sultry/angelic voice of yours, please. With Mike Simmons and Derek Joseph – admission at the door.
- Dum Dum Girls | Sunday, September 5 | 7:00 pm | $35.25 | Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL – Map | The girls are going to be on a roll tonight – not only will they be rocking the house with their trademark fifties-era rock overhaul, but they will be manning a DJ set afterwards at Beauty Bar at 10pm with the ever-elusive Brent Zmrhal. They lead, we follow. With Vampire Weekend and Beach House - Buy Tickets
- Vanaprasta with Pacific Hurt | Monday, September 6 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | Free | The Echo, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Resident favorite Vanaprasta and OC-based rockers Pacific Hurt will be extending your weekends all September long thanks to taking residency at the Echo every Monday night this month, so check here every weekend to see how you can put a bright spot in your Monday. Did we not mention that it’s free? Show up and get ready to dance for joy or just utter inspiration. For more information, call (213) 413-8200.
So long summer! Those are our picks and we’re sticking to them. So tell us – what’s on your To-See List this weekend?
