FYF Fest 2010: Local Natives
By Seraphina L.
Like Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Local Natives have played almost every summer festival there was this year and we don’t blame the booking agents. They strive to get acts while they’re hot but with Local Natives, they won’t have to worry about their popularity dying down for a while. With the successful release of their debut album, Gorilla Manor, both in the UK and later in the States, this five-piece band only continues to entrance audience everywhere we go. It seems just like yesterday we were just watching these guys play residencies at Silverlake Lounge and Spaceland in Los Angeles!
It was a little odd not to see Edward Sharpe and his massive hippie crew playing this festival but I suppose people may have gotten their fill when they headlined Sunset Junction just a couple of weeks ago. To be honest, I’m glad Local Natives was on this lineup instead because they did a great job at playing a fair, proper, homecoming show.
Unlike the previously mentioned band, they didn’t start 40 minutes late. There weren’t any vocalists slurring their lyrics. It was almost too wholesome to believe. They never forgot to thank everyone for supporting them from day one and they always made sure to tell us that they’re always glad to be home. The reciprocation that happened during their FYF set was a heartwarming one.
With a few tweaks to arrangements here and there, Local Natives played those songs we all had come to familiarize ourselves with in the last two years. The songs may be old but the deliverance is always a nice refresher. They’re a hometown band who is on the other side of the world for most of the year, so seeing Local Natives play an LA festival such as FYF was nothing less than a celebration.
