FYF Fest 2010: Screaming Females
By Seraphina L.
If you’re looking for a fresh new punk rock band from the Jersey area, Screaming Females should be on the top of your list for listening. Shortly after we witnessed The Blow attempt to save her set at FYF Fest, there were a lot of us that continued to push to the front of the stage for the upcoming trio.
In return for faithfully waiting like the good fans we are, Screaming Females saved us from any type of disappoint or regret. Any three-piece band who who captured our full attention during the first song with a sound that was that organic was fine by us!
Eventually, the crowd grew thicker and some of those who had left the same stage during The Blow’s set walked back and banged their heads with approval. The trio who is made up of Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and King Mike on bass immediately brought the feeling of good basics when it came to punk rock but there was also a twist on it.
It could have been the fact that we were all shocked to see how small Paternoster really was. It could have been the fact that we were all shocked at how hard a little girl could shred on the guitar. It could have been her vocals which went from slight vibrato to metal-like roars. Whatever this twist was, like the kind you get from a nice cool drink from the bar, it was refreshing from beginning to end.
