The Social Network has sounded somewhat like a lame concept for a film from the beginning. (Let’s tell the story of guys behind Facebook!) It got even more laughable once the incredibly melodramatic trailer (with a choir singing Radiohead’s “Creep”) came out. Yes, some people may be interested in the creators of one of the most influential social media networks we have today. However, you can also wiki all of that. We don’t need a dramatized version of the life story. If we were going to watch a movie about a social network, it would be this one anyway – and yes, we’re well aware that it’s a spoof.

However, there’s always one thing that can save a story we could care less about – the music. Just look at what the second and third soundtracks for the Twilight Saga did! Bon Iver + Vampires = Tolerable! Broken Social Scene and Beck also revved Scott Pilgrim vs. The World up and now Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails is going to stamp some credibility on The Social Network‘s score. However, you can decide if the music will do a good enough job…

Today, Reznor has decided that he’d allow us to preview a good chunk of the score (which he’s been working on with Atticus Ross) by making five songs available to download for free. Yes, free. According to The Playlist, the songs are up for grabs over on Reznor’s official website and along with the music he provided a message:

“This is what Atticus and I have been working on for the last few months. We had a great time working with David Fincher on this and the film turned out excellent – something we’re very proud of. It opens in theatres Oct 1 and you should check it out.

Musically, this all came out of our secret laboratory – electronic in basis, but mostly organic sounding. Lots of experiments and emphasis on sound fraying around the edges while focusing on the proper emotional tone for the various scenes.

Regarding the purchase options, sorry about the “clunkiness” of not offering the full record digital download pre-sale (and having to visit Amazon). My agenda was to be able to offer this for the lowest possible price and this was the best way to achieve that. Amazon has been a great partner with past projects and I appreciate your understanding.

- Trent Reznor, 9.16.10”

Here is the tracklist for the entire soundtrack. Those with an asterisk beside the titles are the ones which he is currently offering without charge:

  1. Hand Covers Bruise
  2. In Motion
  3. A Familiar Taste
  4. It Catches Up With You
  5. Intriguing Possibilities
  6. Painted Sun In Abstract
  7. 3:14 Every Night
  8. Pieces Form the Whole*
  9. Carbon Prevails
  10. Eventually We Find Our Way*
  11. Penetration
  12. In The Hall of the Mountain King

  15. Almost Home
  16. Hand Covers Bruise, Reprise
  17. Complication with Optimistic Outcome

Let us know what you think about the five song. Are they better than what Daft Punk‘s given us so far for Tron Legacy?
