MGMT Actually Has To Deny That Their Fans Hurl Urine At Them
By Travis Woods
Usually, rock bands have to deny things like drug abuse, sexual harassment, drug abuse, and drug abuse. Perhaps it says something, then, that a band like MGMT instead has to deny the fact that they suck so much live that disappointed fans pelt them with cups full of urine.
Turns out that during a weekend show in Manchester, England last week, drummer William Berman was pelted with a cup containing a mysterious substance, which Pitchfork reported to be urine. The incident came at the same time as rumors slipped out that the band’s level, in response to the let-down new MGMT record Congratulations, is leaning on the group and restricting their artistic freedom in the studio.
However, according to Spinner, MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden e-mailed Pitchfork to clear up the issue, and deny the presence of disappointed pee:
“All accounts of this alleged piss-throwing/shirt-piss-catching incident as well as the ‘label not giving them as much freedom’ are false and maliciously embellished… as an indirect result of the Malicious British Journalistic Freedom Act (1666) which entitles gobshot writers for s—y British tabloids to make up whatever the f— they want about whomever they choose (citation needed)… [It was] a celebratory cup of hearty Manchester ale, NOT URINE, was hurled into the air in the direction of the stage… We aren’t even close to starting the process of making a new album, label relations are currently quite friendly, we are very proud of ‘Congratulations.”
So there you have it: MGMT likes Congratulations (even if you don’t), everything is hunky dory between them and their label, and they apparently don’t suck enough to warrant piss-tossing. Ugh. I guess I’ll save my big cups until next year’s tour.
What do you think about MGMT?

I have to wonder why Mr. Woods here thinks MGMT suck so bad? Sure, KROQ kids (which I am going to assume he is) hated Congratulations, but individuals such as myself who appreciate thought out music loved the latest record. In looking through the site, I see you were unhappy with the bands Coachella set. Is it beacuse they didn't play Kids? We're you bummed because you don't enjoy songs over 150 seconds in length? What gives?
Likewise, it's a pretty well known fact that folks in select parts of the UK throw drinks at bands as a sign of appreciation. I assumed any legit music journalist would be aware of this, but you know what happens when you assume….

Travis Woods, this is for you: http://bit.ly/8XPjGi
As far as this is concerned, if Congratulations is such a flop and they "suck" live, then why is their whole tour practically sold out?
Love to see you do that Travis. I'm sure there is a Travis Woods appreciation page on Facebook
