Culture Collide Festival 2010: The Boxer Rebellion
By Seraphina L.
The Boxer Rebellion was another band we were lucky enough to see for the second time. Before Lollapalooza we were lucky enough to attend their first ever Chicago show at the Apple store, and now they were finally here in Los Angeles as part of Culture Collide Festival. Needless to say, we were excited to see a full set from them again this time around on our turf. We had no doubt that Los Angeles would welcome them with open ears as these boys from London (with the exception of vocalist Nathan Nicholson being from the US until 2000) churned out great song after great song.
We were right about Los Angeles welcoming The Boxer Rebellion because as much as we frequent The Echo, we had never seen the venue so packed before. There was hardly any room to breathe as fans held their ground in regards to where they were standing to have a good view. However, we don’t blame everyone for cramming themselves into the place because The Boxer Rebellion have all the qualities a great Brit-pop rock band should have. Not only do their songs have incredible drive topped by Nicholson’s great vocals but they are one of the few bands who write credible indie rock songs that have a potential to cross over to the radio as well.
So why aren’t they bigger than they currently are? We don’t know the answer to that question because we’re surprised they haven’t already blown up in the first place. The Boxer Rebellion put on a great show even if the room is suffocating with sweltering heat. Even if the conditions are as such in the future, we’d still recommend you to experience a live show of theirs.
