Last night was the annual People’s Choice Awards, one of the few awards shows that decides who brings home a trophy by asking the general public to vote. (And by “general public,” we mean teenage girls. How else do you explain Grown Ups winning Best Comedy?)
According to MTV, it was a good show this year, with plenty of big names in the pop music world accepting awards and performing for the audience.
As is to be expected, current teen sensation and voice of the country-pop revolution (a revolution that the music world may or may not need…) Taylor Swift took home the award for Favorite Country Artist, although you have to wonder if anyone seriously thought she had competition in that arena. They might as well have just mailed the trophy to her a few weeks earlier and saved her the trip.
Still, it was nice to see her received the award from none other than Elton John, whom she congratulated on recently becoming a father. Just goes to show that great music is not held down by the generational gap, though we’re still not convinced that Swift’s songs will be considered classics thirty years from now. Time will tell.
Katy Perry, however, was awarded the coveted Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Online Sensation awards. Looks like the “Sesame Street” fiasco did very little to harm her career, thank goodness. Take that, overly concerned parents!
Of course, acceptance speeches tend to be boring and self-indulgent, so there were musical performances to keep fans entertained, courtesy of Selena Gomez & the Scene. The event was hosted by gifted entertainer Queen Latifah, who showed off her own talent during an impressive opening musical number.
So, all in all, sounds like another successful year for the awards show. While there were no memorable moments (in other words, Kanye West didn’t pull any stunts), it was entertaining and kept its target audience happy.
Did you watch the show? What were your thoughts?
