Britney Spears Single Leaks Online a Day Early
By Joseph Oliveto
This just in! Britney Spears is still trying to wiggle her way back into the world of music, despite having gone off the deep end for a few years there. If she were a 70s rock artist, those flirtations with insanity would simply be part of stardom, but Spears is more well-known for writing the kind of pop that scored bad late 90s teen movies, so who knows if her career can recover from that time when she lost her mind.
Still, there seems to be some genuine anticipation for her new work, and this has only increased today, with her latest single “Hold it Against Me” leaking online a day early.
Popeater reports that the tune, which was supposed to be released tomorrow (although a demo version featuring Bonnie McKee on vocals hit the internet last week) has made its way onto the web, although we can’t be sure it will stay there for that long. So, here’s our thoughts…
Yeah, it sounds familiar. It’s not as catchy as any of her earlier hits were, and aside from the fact that the vocals do sound like they’ve been AutoTuned, there’s reason to believe Spears is trying to jump on the Lady Gaga train. As in, it’s a fairly disposable Madonna rip-off with sexual lyrics that are probably supposed to be edgy, but don’t quite get there (unless you’re in middle school).
In the shadow of her meltdown, these generically sexy lyrics are even more difficult to take seriously. We could buy it when she was a rising star, but now she’s more of a symbol of the pressures of stardom than she is an object of male lust.
And honestly, she and her team should realize that’s not such a bad thing. We’ve got too many young female stars who cater to male sexual fantasies. If Spears released a tune that actually confronted her past and explored the experience she went through, for the first time in her career, maybe she could have made something substantial. It’s a missed opportunity.
That’s our take, but maybe you’ll feel differently. Check out the song while you still can today and tell us what you think in the comments!
