The competition has barely begun, but there’s already one musical act getting a major boost in exposure thanks to “American Idol“: Aerosmith.

With the infamous Simon Cowell and the insignificant Kara Dioguardi off the show, two new judges were recruited to fill their spots: Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latter has seen his new role bring some pleasant benefits along with it, as sales of Aerosmith’s various greatest hits collections have risen 250%.

While Aerosmith have always been a legendary rock band (and, in their later years, an embarassing love ballad band), their sales haven’t been quite as high as they used to be, seeing as most of today’s kids probably know them best as “that band that did all the music for Armageddon.” However, since Tyler has appeared on “Idol,” consumers have rediscovered the group, with sales of their albums and downloads of their songs increasing rapidly over the past couple of weeks. If the effect continues, the band’s next album, which they’ve been working on, could become their most successful in years.

Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford was happy, explaining that the “Idol” exposure will “expand [the band's] audience.” While most people who listen to Aerosmith these days are middle-aged rockers who grew up with the band, it’s not impossible that a middle-school girl will now be picking up one of their records along with her Justin Bieber CD.

We’re not sure if that’s a good thing, to be honest…

Is it a good thing? Can increased attention via “American Idol” help this band reclaim it’s place in rock stardom? Tell us in the comments.

[...] It’s been a big year for Steven Tyler–maybe even bigger than the year that Armageddon reminded viewers that Aerosmith used to write good ol’fashioned blues rock (just turn the movie off before the end credits and you can forget that the group turned into a boy band for a few years). By taking a gig as a judge on “American Idol,” the rocker renewed interest in his band, resulting in a welcome increase in sales. [...]
