Britney Spears may have gone through a period of time in which the public’s fascination with her had less to do with her work, and more to do with her very public breakdown–in the future, we’ll call this “The Charlie Sheen Phenomenon.” Still, while many may have predicted that her music career was over, she’s been able to silence the nay-sayers this past week.
The Celebrity Cafe reports that her latest album, Femme Fatale, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s top 200 chart. Oops, we did it again (bought her music).
Boasting impressive sales numers–276,000 copies in the first week–Femme Fatale beat out Wiz Khalifa’s latest release, Rolling Papers, which currently holds the No. 2 spot.
Well, for better or for worse, it looks as though Britney Spears is back in action. While it may help that some of her new tunes sound like they were clearly inspired by popular Lady Gaga singles, her “comeback” of sorts has been fairly well promoted over the past couple of months, and it seems like customers are ready to welcome back the former pop megastar.
Oh well, it seems like this kind of bland, generically sexualized music will always be popular among a key demographic, and as long as that audience exists and continues to have indulgent mommies and daddies, this brand of “music” will keep selling.
Britney may be a skilled performer, but she’s no artist. Wiz Khalifa is behind her in terms of sales, but as a true creative talent, he’s miles ahead of her. From the looks of it, he always will be.
Do you think that Britney qualifies as an artist, or is she just another bland pop star with nothing substantial to say?
