Maffiss: BeatCrave Fav

Maffiss, whom recently assumed a new pseudonym, Rivers & Robots, is the solo project of Ogvidius, a musician from Manchester, U.K. with a knack for creating beautiful melodies with up-beat rhythms using a variety of instruments. He studied piano, violin, and clarinet as a child, and later learning electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums. He uses all of these instruments in his music, combining them to create sounds that are calming, as in “Like Waterfalls,” which lays soft vocals over strong piano chords and guitar strums. His lyrics tend to be short phrases, like “For You have rescued my soul,” which allow you to hang off of each word tirelessly, dreamily. Other tracks have a restless feel to them, such as “All I Want,” which begins with an uneasy hum that leaves you holding your breath until his soft, folksy vocals fall upon the range of piano, drums, and synth background. Every track exudes a sense of wonder of the world, an essence of joy derived by the creation of each sound.
