Ian Davis: BeatCrave Fav

The other day I was listening to “In The Morning” by J. Cole featuring Drake, and I thought that the song didn’t belong in today’s music. It was old school, like Nate Dogg-type of old school. Indeed, music, or to be more specific, hop hop, is always changing (for better or worse). Today there’s a lot of trash out there. Rappers sing about guns, drugs, and just plain nonsense. Even Lil’ Wayne has released a fair share of trash music. But among the trash, there’s still some artists who focus on writing well-written verses, and Ian Davis is one of them. Old school rap and hip hop will always be great, but one good thing about newer hip hop is its flexibility to not only be associated or sound like ‘gangster music.’ Take rappers like Lupe Fiasco, Nas and Kanye West whose lyrics are witty and fresh. Ian Davis is something like those two rappers. He’s a self-proclaimed nerd who does not sing and rap about something he’s not like a drug dealer or a gang banger. Instead he writes good lyrics, and describes his time in the studio as a type of journal entry. Currently, the rapper/producer, is re-releasing his 2008 single “She Crazy” which isn’t as crazy as it may sound. The single isn’t full of shenanigans, instead “She Crazy” is a thoughtful song with a good flow. Check out this unique artist in our BeatCrave Fav series below…
