Concert Picks: DD/MM/YYYY, April Smith and the Great Picture Show, Black Taxi…
By Lindsey DardenYep, it’s October. (Nearly, at least.) And yeah, we’re aware that it was only the new year nine full months ago. Not quite sure how we got to this end of the calendar ourselves, but it’s a good place to be – especially with a well-rounded crop of bands at our disposal and the weekend at our front door. What have you got going for the next few days? If you’ve got a couple of hours in between finalizing Halloween costumes, we suggest taking a breather at one of the following show. Short of squeezing them like young, ripe pumpkins, we think we’ve made some pretty good choices. Check out our picks for the weekend below:
- DD/MM/YYYY | Friday, September 30 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $10 | Cameo Gallery, Brooklyn, NY – Map | Their method of operation is more punk at first but becomes more experimental/psychadelic the more time you give it. Oh, and in case you are concerned with how exactly to pronounce the Toronto, Canada-based band’s name, it is in face “Day, Month, Year”. Apparently, though, this is either the last or one of the last times the band will perform under this name, as they will soon be performing as soon a November 17 at the M for Montreal Festival under the name Absolutely Free. Make note, and say you were there! With Yvette, Bambara – for more information, call (718) 302-1180.
- The Nocturnes | Friday, September 30 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $7 | Central Social Aid and Pleasure Club, Santa Monica, CA – Map | A very recent favorite of ours in our BeatCrave Fav series, the LA-based ambient, mellow, and deliciously dreamy alt band will more than likely be doling out tracks from their latest album, Aokigahara, released this past August. Like sweet, sweet candy. With El Elle, Psychic Friend, Pageants - Buy Tickets
- April Smith and the Great Picture Show | Saturday, October 1 | 8:00 pm | 18+ | $10 | Bottom Lounge, Chicago, IL – Map | has a theatrical, avant-garde, vaudeville feel to it, something old-time-y that harkens back to the good times that most of us weren’t around to appreciate. (Quite possibly.) We so love when a revival-esque troupe does it well without a hint of pretense that we aren’t ashamed to say so. Stuff like this matters! Add some strategically-placed rock and an uber strong vocal component with emotional range and you’ve got yourself a live show with the potential to elicit something more than a smirk or toe-tap. - Black Taxi | Saturday, October 1 | 10:30 pm | 21+ | $12 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | New York-based rock and roll with a tinge of funk and electronic is what Black Taxi brings to the forefront. Tonight’s a special one, as it’s their single release party, something understandbly easy to be excited about. Come rock out with a mellow but seriously awesome band that has interjected the idea of being a grown up somewhere in the idea of being a rockstar (face it, we wouldn’t say so if we weren’t impressed). With The Bright Light Social Hour – Buy Tickets
- Jewels of the Nile | Sunday, October 2 | 10:00 pm | 18+ | $8 | The Echo, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The Los Angeles-based self-described “easy listening” band has definitely got a little dark side to their sound, a little edge that we wouldn’t say wasn’t expected, but that we definitely appreciate from our picks. Keeps us on our toes. But seriously, something tells us that they’re brand of eerie audible-icious-ness would be appropriate in the backseat of a — ah, that explains it. “Backseat bass hearse”, so they’ve alsofurther labeled themselves. There had to be more to this “easy listening” business. With Kindest Lines, Violet Tremors - Buy Tickets
Those are our picks and we’re sticking to ‘em. Who’s on your To See List this weekend?
