Concert Picks: Gold Motel, Old Californio, The Skirts…By Lindsey Darden
We’ve got to tip our hats to the following bands who are swinging their instruments of choice and slinging their voices to the far reaches of the respective venue, mainly for providing us with choice concert picks despite the tendency of them being slim this time of year. Besides, the thought of staying in any weekend-night of the year is incomprehensible… somewhat, anyway. Peanut brittle, egg nog and all. No matter how you spend it, stay safe and warm this weekend. Happy holidays from all of us at BeatCrave!
- Gold Motel | Friday, December 23 | 7:00 pm | All Ages | $12 | Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL – Map | The solo music project of singer-songwriter Greta Morgan of Illinois-based quarter The Hush Sound has taken life in a fleshed-out form of summery California-esque song styles. Her latest, Talking Fiction, was released in November of last year with no shortage of rolling rock beats, clever, honest lyrics and smooth instrumentals on all counts. Cohesive and comprehensive (and smart), we suggest a listen or five. Million. With The Deserters, Chaperone – Buy Tickets
- Old Californio | Friday, December 23 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $5 | The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA – Map | A hybrid of rock, country, bluegrass, and folk comprises the catchy sound of Pasadena, California-based band Old Californio, who are currently introducing the fan base, new and old, to their latest album entitled Sundrunk Angels. Thankfully they’ve more than a knack for awesome EP titles; rather, their range of style from track to track is so on point, variety being the spice of life and all. Nice to know someone’s paying more than a fair share of attention – to the delight of our ears. With Whiskey Saints - Buy Tickets
- The Skirts | Friday, December 23 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $5 | Glasslands, New York, NY – Map | We had a feeling that the name of the five-piece all-girl rock group was more than metaphorical or projecting. The Sacramento-based pop-punk-alt-esque band has been in the biz for some time, with albums Take Off, Look Up, and Smashing the Sky making up their repertoire. They’ve an almost Courtney Love/Shirley Manson edge that naturally goes appreciated under any musical circumstance.
