yellowbirds Concert Picks: The Space Age Bachelor, Yellowbirds, Baron Von Luxxury...

Dearest Reader,

We know you’ve been aching for winter to be over. Trust us, we have, too. With signs of warmer weather in the nearish-midst – only to be quashed by rain, snow, and chilling cold – it’s a bummer to be wearing coats, heavy boots, and lots o’ layers when our skin is begging to be kissed by the sun. And so we offer this silver lining of a less literal sort until the weather decides to catch up: five bands rounding with the energy to transport all who listen to the warmer portions of spring time in our brain’s anticipatory, daydream-y sectors.

You’re welcome. Happy weekend-ing,

  • The Space Age Bachelor | Friday, February 17 | 9:00 pm | All Ages | $5 | Pehrspace, Los Angeles, CA – Map |  Sometimes the mystery of the artist behind the music is the second most (if not the most) intriguing quality about the music itself. As far as we can tell you about The Space Age Bachelor, Eliot Gardepe, is that his music is very 21st century forward, fierce, hip, sultry, and fit for dancing. And apparently the man behind the curtain thinks that’s all we need to know… and we are fine with that. Vogue, anyone? With Poppet, Habits, Letters – visit venue website for more info.
  • Yellowbirds | Friday, February 17 | 10:30 pm | 21+ | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | The true talent behind a one-man effort is the ability to make it sound anything but that which it is, while acknowledging profusely that it is what it is. Yellowbirds, Sam Cohen’s solo effort outside of Apollo Sunshine, is a down-and-up-the-coast road trip with sunny skies, airy guitars, and lifted spirits, tracing the lines of pop with his fingers and fully embracing modern and folk-esque rock. With Woodsman – Buy Tickets
  • Thick Shakes | Saturday, February 18 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $5 | The Gutter, Brooklyn, NY – Map | There’s so much going on with Thick Shakes’ sound that we’re not exactly sure what to do with it except go along with it. The Boston-based band heavily banks on chords springing from organs and supporting vocals against a backdrop of a sub-genre of uber spirited sixties rock and roll. With Lead Stones, Numerators – for more information, call (718) 387-3585.
  • Baron Von Luxxury | Saturday, February 18 | 10:00 pm | 21+ | Free with RSVP |  3Clubs, Los Angeles, CA – Map | New wave doesn’t sound good on everyone, but Baron Von Luxxury, aka Blake Robin, might as well have been born into it. The smile-inducing properties his album, The Last Seduction, are many, criss-crossing rock and pop, hard/edgy and glam/glittery alike. Also, if you’re a fan of the ultra-exclusive, his album will be available at tonight’s venue for the first time  anywhere, in-package and in live format. With The M.I.D.S – check out the RSVP page on Facebook for more information.
  • Asobi Seksu | Sunday, February 19 | 4:00 pm | All Ages | Free | Saki, Chicago, IL – Map |  There’s a lot that can be said for the Brooklyn-based band’s impeccable knack at threading themes between ambient pop, rock, and shoegaze styles – which can be heard on their their latest album, Fluorescent. Instead, with the exception of the words ‘dreamy’ and ‘lifting’, within multiple layers and textures, we’ll let the feeling speak for itself within you. We’d think they’d rather it do so, anyway. For more information, call (773) 486-3997.
Those are our picks and we’re sticking to ‘em. Who’s on your To See List this weekend?
