Sad news today for both Fiona Apple and her fans—the singer has cancelled a host of tour dates in South America on her current worldwide tour, as the singer’s pet pitbull, Janet, is dying.  Read on for the details.

Apple posted a handwritten letter online on Tuesday, November 20, noting that Janet was adopted at four months of age, and was subjected to dogfighting in Echo Park, California.  14 years later, Janet is now suffering from Addison’s Disease as well as a tumor in her chest.

A distraught and saddened Apple has elected to cancel her South American tour dates in order to be with Janet, who is unable to travel.  Specific tour dates have not been mentioned.  And, as Billboard notes, while there is no mentioned of rescheduling the dates, Apple does ask fans that they be able to “meet a little while later.”

An excerpt of Apple’s letter can be read below; the rest can be read here.

“I am not the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship. I am the woman who stays home and bakes Tilapia for my dearest, oldest friend…I am staying home, and I am listening to her snore and wheeze, and reveling in the swampiest, most awful breath that ever emanated from an angel. And I am asking for your blessing.”
