In addition to its Beef ‘n Chedder sandwich, Roast Beef sandwich, and crack-like addictive curly fries, Arby’s is known for its logo—McDonald’s has a giant yellow “M,” Jack in the Box has that creepy big head, and Arby’s has a giant10 gallon cowboy hat. So we suppose it makes an odd kind of sense that the fast food sandwich chain would purchase the oversized brown hat that Pharrell Williams wore to the Grammys this year.
The Vivienne Westwood-created hat, which became a bit of a pop cultural sensation after it appeared at the Grammys, thanks in no small part to the fact that it’s utterly ridiculous, was recently put up for sale in a charity auction for From One Hand To AnOTHER, Williams’ charity for “Pharrell Williams Resource Centers’ learning programs developed for every one of the underserved youth between the ages of 7 and 20 in at risk communities throughout the country.” That hat was purchased for a total of $44,000.
Arby’s was revealed as the buyer of that hat when Williams took to Twitter to thank “whoever bought my Grammy hat on @eBay for $44,100. Your donation benefits From One Hand To AnOTHER.” Arby’s quickly Tweeted back “You’re welcome. We’re HAPPY to support a great cause & get our hat back.” Which is cute and quite generous of the restaurant chain—but still, what are they gonna do with a $44,000 hat?
What do you think of the Pharrell news?
