Momu, emerging as a progressive-beat duo hailing from San Francisco, gives us their new album, along with a new sound, in Momentum. With a more subtle approach to this genre, Momentum demonstrates a softness that wasn’t as prevalent in the groups other work, namely 2006’s self-titled debut which was critically well received. You may have even heard a track or two from Momu on Dance Dance Revolution. Yeah, they’re just that awesome.

This album is pretty awesome. Having never heard of it before, I wasn’t sure what to expect. And maybe that’s why I found this album, Space Punk Starlet so enjoyable. Don’t expect much, don’t get disappointed, right?
Well, I actually think there’s a bit more to it then that. Perhaps….talent. Yes, that’s it! In Space Punk Starlet, The Frontier Brothers, consisting of Brett Moses, Marshall Galactic, and Travis Newman, deliver a raw, unique and exciting sound. What I can only describe as The Kooks meets Killers, with some of that I don’t give an eff attitude, this album kept me more than just entertained.

Driving down Sunset at 4:30 on a Friday on my way home from a grueling week at work will, without fail, always piss me off. It’s the kind of thing where I will blast the music in my car so loud to drown out my profanities. Last Friday was nothing new. So I figured I’d give Miranda Lee Richards’ new album, “Light of X” a listen, to add a little productivity to my routine. Before I could even reach the end of the first track, I found it utterly IMPOSSIBLE to stay mad. This music, a blend of mellow pop with a country twist, was literally lulling me into submission, even with the blasting sun, car horns, and idiotic LA drivers doing their best to wear me down. I was in awe.

Arriving at the Stereophonics show at The Henry Fonda Music Box, I was overcome with this overwhelming sense that I was in the presence of rockstars. It wasn’t just the band. The leather jacket and skinny pant dress code memo had definitely been received by 90% of the audience, and with all those hotties I definitely felt out of place. But did it really matter? Not one bit. My excitement over the prospect of finally seeing Stereophonics, a band whose live show I had only heard legend of, was bubbling over and I could no longer be concerned with silly things like a waning self confidence level.
Their show reminded me of some of the elements of a good performance. One of those elements that’s relatively indescribable is the “light” that a band radiates. The way that no matter how near or far, the band can seem larger than life, forcing you to look no where else but the stage, focused on the presentation of their musical endeavors. It’s the kind of factor that doesn’t necessarily make itself known at the time of the show, but it’s the way you look back on it. Picturing the scene there is this light that just floats around the band.

Keaton Simons new album asks “Can you hear me?” The answer is a resounding yes, and we want to hear more! From the moment I popped this album into my CD player, I was amazed by the talent Simons displays. I wondered where on earth he could have been hiding, but I suppose that an unimportant question now that I’ve been graced by his musical magic. Woo!
En route towards a Paolo Nutini/Gavin Degraw-esque sound, Simons differs in ways that prove to be extremely successful for this album. Think a dash of pizzazz, a sprinkle of edge, and a pinch of fresh that make his sound something worth hearing. He succeeds in coercing you to want to listen to what he’s saying; mainly because unlike some artists, he sounds like he has lived. Through his music you, in turn, are experiencing his experiences, and isn’t that what music is all about?

The Chronicals of Jeremiah Victory
The first time you meet Jeremy Vic (short for Jeremiah Victory), its not hard to figure out what he’s about. He doesn’t hide his passion or excitement for the music he makes whatsoever, and this type of honesty is almost disarming. Observing him with his peers provides another peek into this passion; the support behind his debut album The Chronicles of Jeremiah Victory is astonishing, as friends new and old came to rally in support of his endeavor.
All of this, however, is secondary to the music, which was still waiting to be debuted at “South,” a hip Santa Monica sports bar, when I arrived. Playing mostly rock earlier in the night, there was a clear shift in the vibe as the lights dimmed, and “Light It Up,” one of the most club friendly tracks on the album, began pumping through the speakers. Without realizing that they were listening to an up and coming new artist, peoples’ heads began to nod, booties began to shake, and it was clear this was a success. The sentiment of one party goer accurately reflected my feelings about the track, “The more I listened to it the more I liked it!”
