Concert Review: Electric Daisy Carnival

Monday, June 29, 2009 12:27PM - By Winnie Jaing

WJaingEDC26 Concert Review: Electric Daisy Carnival

This past weekend was filled with so many concerts in the Southern California region: The Vans Warped Tour in both Pomona and Ventura, Explosions in the Sky at the Palladium, Cursive at the El Rey, and the Electric Daisy Carnival at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum where the Laker Parade was held earlier this month.

The Electric Daisy Carnival (also known as EDC) has been running for the last 13 years, and has garnered more and more notoriety for its infamous music acts and extreme concert-goers. This year, EDC was so largely anticipated that it became a two day event, featuring artists like the Thievery Corporation (doing a live set), Paul Oakenfold, Daedalus, Shiny Toy Guns, and Boys Noize on Friday, and Groove Armada, Benny Benassi, Paul Van Dyk, The Crystal Method, DJ AM, Diplo, and Simian Mobile Disco on Saturday night.

Valencia06242009

Have YOU ever been called up at 3 in the morning by a record label executive dying to get you on his label? Valencia has. After sending their three-song demo to I Surrender Records owner Rob Hitt (of Midtown fame), they received an early morning phone call from the man, who strong suggested they allow him to help  release their upcoming album.

A week later, they signed to the record label, and on August 26th, 2008, “We All Need A Reason To Believe” was released. This Philadelphia, Penn. band has progressed so much in the last five years. Named after Valencia, Spain, Shane Henderson (vocals), Maxim Soria (Drums), Brendon Walter (Guitar), JD Perry (Guitar), and George Ciukuresu (Bass) exemplify the true meaning of Alternative Rock and Punk Pop through their music.

Check them out on the SHH.IT HAPPENS tour from June 23rd to July 23rd, followed by Warped Tour from July 24th through August 22nd! Also, check them out in our BeatCrave Fav series below!

War Tapes: BeatCrave Fav

WarTapes 0040sm War Tapes: BeatCrave Fav

Los Angeles Quartet War Tapes hasn’t been in the music scene for too long, but already they’ve been compared to the likes of Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, Interpol, and even The Cure. War Tapes’ 1980s new-wave post-punk style is unique in the sense that it also has the ability to entrance people and get them to sing along as well. Lead Singer, Neil Popkin, likes to call it “heart quaking doom-pop.”

War Tapes’ new album, The Continental Divide, was released earlier this year on May 26th, and has helped them garner much success. Their newest claim to fame has been their cameo on ABC’s hit TV show, “Greek” just a few days ago.

Runner Runner: BeatCrave Fav

runnerrunner06032009 Runner Runner: BeatCrave Fav

Talk about new bands. Runner Runner has only been functioning for a little over a year, and already they’ve toured with bands like Mest and Relient K. Granted, the members of this band come from other successful bands (Over It, Rufio), but it just goes to show that once you are in the music industry, you can’t get out of it. This unsigned quintet utilizes pop rock and electronica to create what lead singer Ryan Ogren calls “undeniable pop songs”.

Runner Runner’s name comes from the poker term meaning “against the odds”. It also exemplifies the amount of energy this band has at each and every one of its shows. Catch Runner Runner on tour in a city near you and check them out in our BeatCrave Fav series below!

The Virgins: BeatCrave Fav

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 2:00PM - By Winnie Jaing

virgins5202009 The Virgins: BeatCrave Fav

You may not have heard of the Virgins, but when it comes to the music scene, they are anything but (virgins, that is!). Before the band even officially formed, they were signed to Atlantic Records. Their music has been featured as the score to an episode of Gossip Girl. They’ve toured with Jet and have even opened for rock legends Sonic Youth.

Well, if they’re such a great band, then why haven’t you heard of them yet? Their eponymous album, The Virgins, has yet to hit its one year anniversary, and their only other claim to fame would have to be an episode of Entourage. Nonetheless, their non-stop touring is slowly helping them garner attention, and their dance-able Strokes-like music only makes them seem that much more amiable.

Owl City: BeatCrave Fav

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 2:00PM - By Winnie Jaing

owlcity5132009 Owl City: BeatCrave Fav

Despite visiting Seattle for the first time last month, Owl City’s most prominent song is “Hello Seattle”, an electro-pop song filled with lyrics about hospital parking lots, manta rays, and albatross. With over 10 million plays on MySpace, 20,000 digital albums sold, and over 200,000 individual tracks sold, Owl City’s only member Adam Young has been compared to hellogoodbye, Death Cab for Cutie, and even Jack’s Mannequin.

Owl City writes and records his music in his basement, an interesting feat considering that his exposure to artists like Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy deem him popular enough to garner props from celebrities themselves. Young doesn’t limit himself, though. He is currently involved in two side projects: Swimming with Dolphins and Port Blue.
