Instead of embracing a singular music style, the 21st century so far has been about being experimental within one’s genre of choice. Just because the year is already moving at a decidedly quickened pace doesn’t mean you have to. Behold the power of music and its ability to slow the world down – or at least encase it in a, well, music-filled bubble – for a few 30-45-minute sets at a time. The bands that follow for our picks this weekend seem to abide by that philosophy in one way or another. Whether tele-transporting to the sixties via classic rock, melding genres in the 21st century experimental style, or strumming and drumming to the garage punk custom, there’s something to be taken away by. Dearest Reader,

We know you’ve been aching for winter to be over. Trust us, we have, too. With signs of warmer weather in the nearish-midst – only to be quashed by rain, snow, and chilling cold – it’s a bummer to be wearing coats, heavy boots, and lots o’ layers when our skin is begging to be kissed by the sun. And so we offer this silver lining of a less literal sort until the weather decides to catch up: five bands rounding with the energy to transport all who listen to the warmer portions of spring time in our brain’s anticipatory, daydream-y sectors.

You’re welcome. Happy weekend-ing,

Long live the throwback, from the eighties to the sixties to the fifties and beyond. When done well and with a modern creativity scheme, venturing into the past proves to be a great source of inspiration for our minds as well as our feet. The five shows that follow invoke these properties, with head-bopping, hip-swaying results. If in need of a vacation, step into a musical time machine instead – and enjoy some modern indie styles as well. Check out our picks for the weekend below…
