The Mars Volta always manage to get people off with their soft psychedelic beginnings and hard core endings; their new album Octahedron is no different. The Grammy Award winning band has done it again, but in Octahedron, The Mars Volta give in to their softer side (not referring to the last 2 minutes of nearly every song, which seems to be more like “improv-jam” sessions), which is exactly what the band needed; a change from all their pre-endless chaos.
In Octahedron, The Mars Volta prove that whether it’s acoustic or electric guitars, they will deliver a sound that sends you into a psychedelic adventure. Guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez mixes in elements of punk and jazz, which coexist perfectly with Cedric Bixler-Zavala‘s falsetto vocals. The mixture of these two create a melodramatic piece; screams and chaos, yet all under a soft roof.

The Mars Volta’s album Octahedron, due for release next week, is now available on Myspace (link) in its entirety for you to listen to. The bold offering emulates other bands that have streamed entire albums online like Wilco and Grizzly Bear.
It’s Volta’s fifth studio-recorded release, and the track Octopaxi reminds me a bit of the famous debut album De-Loused in the Comatorium. Check out the full track list below:

The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López has spoken out against the negative tone of foreign press against the Mexican outbreak of swine flu. He told NME:
“It’s not the hysteria that the right-wing media are making you think it is. It’s less dangerous than a common cold. This has been a perfect moment for right-wing republican media to say: ‘You see! You see these filthy people? You see what they’re doing? This is very scary!’”
Rodríguez-López thinks that the Mexican economy has been damaged due to the media coverage, and said that “it’s another act of terrorism, it’s another terrorist tactic.”

I always look forward to new The Mars Volta. They are one of the most innovative rock groups of our time. They are always changing to fit the environment around them. Every album they’ve released stems from new inspirations and so you can imagine how excited I was to find out that The Mars Volta‘s fifth studio album, Octahedron, will be released on June 23 by Warner Bros. Records.
