With its For Sale sign pulled off the front lawn this week by British record company EMI, Abbey Road studios is (finally) being declared a national historic landmark, British Culture Minister Margaret Hodge announced Tuesday. EMI has since shifted its plans from trying to unload Abbey Road to developing a blueprint to revitalize the famous studios.
Hodge declared the site in west London a Grade II listed building based on its “outstanding cultural interest.”

Andrew Lloyd Webber may be uplifting our hearts another way through music. It turns out the famous British composer in musical theatre has his eye on the Abbey Road Studios which EMI has unfortunately had to put up for sale in order to survive. We previously mentioned that the legendary studio could go save the label if it sold for just shy of $165 million, but now the New York Times is reporting that the studio/home is now going for anything higher than $47 million. With more successful musicals he’s written for, Webber’s personal fortune is estimated to be about £750 million. So we know, like Paul McCartney, he’s definitely got the money!

The Beatles disbanded long ago and Paul McCartney has had an incredible solo career so far with Ringo Starr attempting to follow close behind. However, the end of the Beatles era may truly be turning into a reality very soon. The famous recording studio on Abbey Road is up for sale because of EMI‘s severe financial problems.
Yes, we’re talking about the famous studio in London where the Beatles recorded their last album. Yes, we’re talking about the album that made that zebra striped crosswalk famous. Most importantly, when we’re talking about Abbey Road we’re almost always talking about the Beatles! However, EMI has gotten themselves into such a rut that they may be selling the pop culture landmark to a buyer who will turn it into an apartment complex. Excuse us, flats.
