Woodsist Festival: Concert Photos and Review

All Saints Day CP 6 15 2010c Woodsist Festival: Concert Photos and Review

Although the label itself is based in Brooklyn, Woodsist decided to make their annual festival bi-coastal this year with having one event in New York and one over here in Los Angeles. When we think about Woods member, Jeremy Earl, putting plans together for an event across the nation, it seems like a lot of trouble to go through. However, sticking to the indie and DIY aesthetic, bands simply played where they were supposed to play and the crowds were ready to take their place. There’s no time for worrying about lavish details which bigger festivals tend to waste their brain cells on.

With a roster full of artists who all run in the same crowd such as Vivian Girls‘ Katy Kickball, Best Coast, Real Estate and Abe Vigoda, the crowd was definitely a young one. We ran into kids who drove all the way from San Diego for what was an epic event to them. However, for us, it was just another night to take in the artistry from bands who put their effort into communities like The Smell and FYF Fest.

MG 6592 NO CANCER! Benefit: Review and Photos

Last Sunday, all the hipsters who couldn’t care less about the Super Bowl headed on over to Los Angeles’ art gallery and performance venue, The Strange, for a very good cause. Starting at noon, bands such as Abe Vigoda, Darker My Love, No Age, Nodzzzz, Best Coast and Vivian Girls came to the charming location to help raise money for a dear friend’s mom who needed the funds due to cancer.

Events This Weekend: Abe Vigoda, Dredg, Squirrel Nut Zippers…

abe vigoda by sarah cass Events This Weekend: Abe Vigoda, Dredg, Squirrel Nut Zippers...

Well… if you’re not able to make it out to Coachella, here are a few good shows for you to check out…

  • Crooked Crow | Friday, April 17 | 9:00 pm | 21 + | Arlene’s Grocery, New York, NY -  Map | The D.C.-based alt-rock band, who positions their sound alongside Tonic and Vertical Horizon, will join a line-up including Kasper Kaae, NinetyFive, and Joe and the Coats, among others. For more information, call (212) 358-1633.
  • Abe Vigoda | Saturday, April 18 | 8:30 pm | $10 | 21+ | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Proof in that there is a relatable message not far beneath the surface of heavy guitars, drums, and mostly melody-less singing (we dig the tune “Gallop”), the Los Angeles-based band will be sharing the evening’s bill with The Intelligence and The Drones. Click here for tickets.
  • Dredg | Sunday, April 19 | 7:00 pm | $22.50 – $25 | Highline Ballroom, New York, NY -Map | Holy elaborate artwork, Batman. It goes without saying how appreciated it is when a stunning visual is not merely compensation for what might lack audibly. With that said, Dredg’s sound is as beautiful as the artwork they incorporate; feel free to have a look/listen here. Click here for tickets.
  • Squirrel Nut Zippers | Sunday, April 19 | 8:00 pm | $24 | The Independent, San Francisco, CA – Map | Omigod, you guys. Does anyone remember “Prince Nez” from back in the day? Being drawn-in by the ’20s-’30s era style was unavoidable. Please don’t say I was the only eight-year-old who made my parents worry about my mental health by singing it at the top of my lungs in the back of the family minivan. Click here for tickets.

POLL: Which 2009 Album Are You Most Excited For?

It’s a new year and that means it’s time for brand new music! Pitchfork has already named Animal Collective’s Meriweather Post Pavillion the first great album of 2009. Does this fact make it hop on top of your list?

Some are highly anticipated because of the wait (Morrissey), some have been hyped up through serious tours (MSTRKRFT), and some are just exciting because you never know which album will include your favorite crass lyric in the future (Lily Allen)!

Take a look at some albums BeatCrave highly anticipates, and let us know what you think!

Know Your LA Bands: Abe Vigoda Interview

Friday, October 3, 2008 9:33PM - By

abevigoda1 sl100308 Know Your LA Bands: Abe Vigoda InterviewBeatCrave brings you band, Abe Vigoda, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. Abe Vigoda has been making music together since 2004 and is now one of the most sought out indie bands to play alongside with. Just as their friends from The Smell, No Age, they have been steadily coming out with new music and regularly touring. Although they have often been dubbed as “that tropical punk band,” the guys of Abe Vigoda (yes, it is also the name of the guy from The Godfather) know where their sound has started but more importantly where it’s going.

As part of LA’s Eagle Rock Music Festival, Abe Vigoda takes the stage tomorrow night on October 4th. If you’re in the area, be sure to catch their set which starts at 6:30pm on the Emerging Stage. They’ve recently been snatched up by big new names such as Vampire Weekend, and they’re about to blow up even more than they have. It only makes sense to catch this truly original noise punk band when they are still around in the local scene.

Until then, check out our interview with guitarist, Juan Velasquez, and just wait. Everyone will be talking about these guys and you’ll be glad to have some solid knowledge.
