Green Day never seemed like the kind of band that would release a rock opera; that’s the type of thing that prententious 70s prog rock groups do, not slacker punks, right? Well as we all know, American Idiot turned out to be a massive success, lending its story and songs to a Broadway play of the same name. Now, according to Billboard, Hollywood has decided its high time the musical be made into a movie.

Billie Joe Armstrong, you know the frontman of the punk band Green Day, took the stage as St. Jimmy in the Broadway musical ‘American Idiot,’ on Wednesday night. Actor Tony Vincent who usually plays the role was away on a ‘family matter.’ So Armstrong decided to come in and fill the void.

As most of you know, Green Day‘s “rock-opera” and hit album, American Idiot, has taken the stage with high anticipation from music and theatre fans. With a plot of “disaffected suburban youth as they search for meaning in their lives,” Billie Joe Armstrong and director Michael Mayer, were hoping that it would fit right in with the other musicals who have a similar theme. After five years, Green Day is coming back with a spanking new album, 21st Century Breakdown. The follow-up to the highly successful 2004 American Idiot will drop May 15th, and their first single will be “Know Your Enemy.” The album is supposedly going to have a throwback sound to Dookie as they worked with producer Butch Vig (also a member of Garbage). American Idiot was a rock opera with many detailed acts, and the new album may be the same. The album is divided into acts yet again: “Heroes and Cons,” “Charlatans and Saints,” and “Horseshoes and Handgrenades.” Hmm… Will this album be as successful? Are they just co-existing with Blink 182 for a year of pop disaster? Do you even care? Let us know!
