Justin Bieber’s fault? Maybe.
He did, astonishingly, win the show’s super-duper big prize, Artist of the Year, but Sunday’s telecast still found itself tumbling down to a four-year ratings low.
The three-hour ceremony averaged 11.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, a 19 percent drop from last year, and the lowest result since 2006 when 10.9 million people tuned in.

Another awards show equals but unnecessarily calls for another jam-packed schedule of performances from artists who can’t really dish out the goods live. Although that doesn’t seem to matter since the artists the American Music Awards book are either 1) not already snatched up by their competitor (The Grammys) or 2) perfect examples of how the media and hype can help sustain a “career.”

Well it happened, everyone. Two of the biggest boy bands of the 1990s (minus N’SYNC) not only shared the stage last night but incorporated their well-known lyrics and choreography into a medley-mashup. 20 somethings and 30-somethings all got a chance to relive their tween obsessions as The Backstreet Boys and NKOTB sang “Everybody” and “Hangin’ Tough” back to back. Even though we had predicted how ridiculous this comeback performance would be, it actually wasn’t that bad. There is still only one member who can sing really well in each group but they sure did get those dance moves down. Watch the medley below if you missed it!

All current tweens and tweens of the past who are fans of magazines such as Teen Beat or Tiger Beat will be bouncing off the walls once they hear this. Katy Perry, one of the most annoying but biggest pop stars of today, will be joining mega-boy bands of the past, NKOTB (New Kids On The Block) and Backstreet Boys, on stage as part of a performance for the American Music Awards.
Whether this makes you want to watch the AMAs more or less, it’s happening and it will probably be ridiculously hilarious. Details after the jump!

Always scheduled to air before its rival awards show, The Grammys, the American Music Awards have already announced their nominees for 2010. Leading the pack in this “elite” bunch of artists up for awards are Eminem and Lady Antebelleum who are each up for five nominations. B.o.B, Usher, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have all unfortunately accrued up to four nominations each.
Just like the Grammys, the American Music Awards aren’t really anything special anymore. (Were they ever?) Whatever you hear pounding people over the head via mainstream radio will always be a big clue as to who the winners will be. However, if you are so inclined… check the complete list of nominees out after the jump!

Ever since Adam Lambert displayed his goth-glam vocal chops during last season’s American Idol, fans have either been with him or against him. Although he was announced as the runner-up instead of the winner, the buzz around Lambert seems to have overshadowed Kris Allen. A prime example of this is portrayed by Kris Allen only presenting an award instead of performing a number at last night’s American Music Awards.

Despite the fact that the Grammys are just a few months away, the American Music Awards still managed to kick off the music award season with tons of great performances. We’ve all seen Jennifer Lopez and Adam Lambert take a fall during their songs, but award ceremonies are still the great promoters as they cram tons of artist performances into just three hours.
Opening with a performance by Janet Jackson singing all her greatest hits including her new single, “Make Me,” the tone was set to remind the audience that unlike the Grammys, this award show was all about the fans. The big winner of the night was Taylor Swift, who grabbed five AMAs including Artist of the Year – a category which Michael Jackson was also nominated for.

Last night at the American Music Awards, it was a night for every one to bust their asses. Jennifer Lopez aka J-Lo and Adam Lambert both suffered from stage mishaps, with Jenny’s being the worst of the night. She took to the stage to perform the song, “Louboutins” and in a choreographed dance number fell flat mid-way through.
Check out the performance below…

There are tons of award shows that happen every year but the annual shows that tend to pull in the most ratings include: The American Music Awards, The Grammys, MTV’s Video Music Awards, and the Billboard Music Awards. As usual, the AMAs always happen before the Grammy, the Grammy nominations are announced shortly after and we can all watch the AMAs on TV this Sunday night… or not.
The AMAs were originally created by Dick Clark because the The Grammys re-located to a location where CBS would air it instead. In case you didn’t know, ABC aired the first two Grammy award shows. It’s funny to know this piece of information because the tension between the two award shows always seems to fill up the tabloids with gossip even though they are months apart. (The Grammys usually don’t air until February.) Which artists are going to be at which ceremony and why did they choose one over the other?
