AD BRM 090309 Ani DiFranco: BeatCrave Fav

In passing conversation with a random Starbucks stranger, the following realization was so horrifically realized: not everyone knows the absurdly fantastic music of Ani DiFranco.  There is no doubt that you, loyal reader, have heard of or, hopefully, have been listening to the most indie of all successful guitar playing grrls (that’s not a spelling error) since that long, long ago called the nineties.

But, since there are still a few folks out there who don’t know every track in the long list of Righteous Babe Ani albums, let alone her existence in the music world, we at BeatCrave thought we should honor this bi-sexual, feminist, activist, mother and downright awesome musician by inducting the queen of indie/folk into the BeatCrave Fav series.

If you love her already, forgotten just how much you love her or, if you’ve been living under a rock called pop radio, take a moment and relish the greatness that is Ani DiFranco.

bonnaroo image11 Fans Lured By World Class Bonnaroo Lineup: Springsteen, Phish, Wilco...

Bonnaroo 2009 has some of the biggest names in music at the head of its lineup this year, including the reunited Phish, Beastie Boys, Wilco, Snoop Dogg, Nine Inch Nails, Grizzly Bear, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Mars Volta, Animal Collective, Femi Kuti and Bruce Springsteen.

“If there was such a thing as a recession-proof lineup this year, this had to be it,” said Ashley Capps, the co-founder of Bonnaroo and president of AC Entertainment.

Enticing fans to pay $250 to $300 for tickets to the festival is no easy task, and its producers have definitely played it safe, with over 100 must-see bands spread out across six stages.

gliu4 INTERVIEW: Stacy* Clark is all about Apples & Oranges

I caught Stacy* Clark’s set at The Knitting Factory last week and was so blown away by her performance that I demanded an interview. Clark, a guitar playing singer songwriter, and her band performed a powerful set of guitar-heavy songs and heartfelt melodies from her album, Apples & Oranges. Clark is the Winner of the 2007 Orange County Music Awards for ‘Best Female Performer’ and ‘Best Female Artist’ 2006 Southern California Music Awards. Her music has appeared on the MTV and CBS television networks, and she has appeared on stage with Jacks Mannequin, and the Amsterdams. Thankfully, she took time out to answer a few questions.

Top 5: For the Broken Hearted

be brm 102308 Top 5: For the Broken Hearted

It’s a right of passage, a metamorphosis by fire: a broken heart.  The feeling is indescribable, insufferable and truly indelible.  Music, however, is the perfect accompaniment to such pain. Whether it is after discovering the one you love is loving someone else, finally ending the ritual of a tumultuous relationship, waiting for the phone that never rings or receiving an email breaking down the break-up, music is there to soothe the cruel ebbing of a torn heart and fill the aching hollow in the pit of one’s stomach.

This weeks Top 5 celebrates the amazing power of music’s ability to remind anyone going through such heart wrenching pain that they are not alone.  Because of the artist’s own broken heart, these songs were created and because most relationships inevitably end, these songs will forever hold a very dear place in  the mended hearts of many.

ratm brm 100208 Top 5: Lets Get Political

Top 5 is back for its second week!  For those of you just tuning in, the game goes like this: a Top 5 topic is selected and then, according to the theme, 5 songs, albums or artists are picked based on how well they fit within the confines of the subject.  If you think there is a song, album or artist missing, let us know! If you have a great idea for a “Top 5,” we’d love to hear about it.  So, for tonight, let’s get political!

As the quasi-retarded Palin is set to debate the sadly forgettable Biden, the political spirit is fresh in the air. Below is a list of the top 5 political songs from the last 20 years.  While many of the best songs that inspired or were inspired by political, and/or social change were from 60′s and 70′s, it seems appropriate, in a post 9/11 world, to keep it contemporary.
