While we are still mourning the life of a legend and musical icon, here are some of the stories going around in the music world:
Post-humos Michael Jackson is creating a buzz. This time by dominating the UK charts for both albums and singles. According to NME, he scored the number one album and almost a quarter of entire top 200 single countdown. List of where he lies on the chart for both albums and singles are available. (NME)
During their headlining set at Glastonbury’s Jazz World Stage, pop superstars Black Eyed Peas paid tribute to the King of Pop, who passed away on June 25th. Of the global icon, band member Will.i.am had kind words: “He was a friend and we’re gonna miss him very much. Thank you very much for all you’ve done, I’m gonna miss you.” More info on their performance is available including a full list of the songs played and why the crowd booed them early in the set. (NME)
On the second day (June 12) of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, the rain cleared up, but the brutal sun and humidity took its place as the elements of torture.
However, that didn’t stop me from braving the Which Stage for the majority of the day to catch some electrifying sets from Gomez, Animal Collective (photos above) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Check out the photos for Gomez and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs after the cut!
“If there was such a thing as a recession-proof lineup this year, this had to be it,” said Ashley Capps, the co-founder of Bonnaroo and president of AC Entertainment.
Enticing fans to pay $250 to $300 for tickets to the festival is no easy task, and its producers have definitely played it safe, with over 100 must-see bands spread out across six stages.
The majority of the bands for this weekend’s picks are so convoluted in style and sound that they just work. It’s as if they have the nerve to leave you a little scared and confused and think it’s okay – and sure enough, it is. Check them out below, along with the styles of other more traditional bands (but never less complex).
Bassnectar | Friday, May 29 | 8:00 pm | $20 | Henry Fonda Music Box Theater, Hollywood, CA – Map | The experimental electronic free-form project as helmed by Lorin Ashton is self-described as “omni-tempo maximalism”, but we are into the multi-genre effect as well, from 16th century classical music to beat-boxing and ambient rock. Bassnectar will be playing venues in numerous cities across the greater US this summer. Click here for tickets.
Animal Collective | Friday, May 29 | 9:00 pm | $15-$91 | Wiltern Theater, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Pre-planned, artful chaos, that’s Animal Collective. We feel cool just listening to them. We are still agog at their structured lack of structure and are stoked that the rest of the world has caught on, too – even if it means buying tickets a little bit farther in advance. Try your luck; call (213) 380-5005.
Tortoise | Saturday, May 30 | 8:00 pm | $20 | 21+ | The Bell House, New York, NY – Map | A flurried combination of jazz, and electronica coupled with frequent interjections of various horns, rhythm and percussion instruments aids to a whirlwind experience of the mostly-instrumental sort. The Chicago-based post-rock ensemble will be playing with The Bird Show. For more information, call (718) 643-6510.
Animal Collective is one of my favorite bands. Their new album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, has been on constant rotation for the past few months. Unfortunately, I missed them the last time they played. However, if you’re like me and missed the show or you just want to see it again, the entire show has just been posted on NPR website!
Animal Collective recently played a show at the 9:30 club in Washington D.C., and NPR was there to document the event. The concert will be archived on their website and in the Live in Concert podcast. It is super easy to download, all you have to do is go on iTunes, MyYahoo, or Zune, search for the NPR LIve in Concert podcast, and then download it.
Animal Collective appropriately played “Summertime Clothes” on Letterman last night just in time for the upcoming season. As you can see Letterman is holding up their latest album, Merriweather Post Pavillion, and he did not miss the chance to insert a joke by saying “Look for it in the wallpaper department of your favorite store.” [I Guess I'm Floating]
Well, at least Animal Collective is finally getting to the point where they get recognized as a “critically acclaimed musical group,” even if someone else had to tell Letterman to say that.
Watch the performance below! There’s a lot going on with crazy dancers in the background… Let us know what you think!

Remember when you were a teenager and you wanted to listen to music you liked in the car, but your parents absolutely vetoed that option? Parents are so uncool. Well, get a load of this! Three elderly residents of Fishtown, Philadelphia have created a show where they review music of today’s generation (The Thermals, Joanna Newsom, The Decemberists, Clipse, and more) at a diner called Sulimay’s, thus giving their series the title “Breakfast at Sulimay’s.” In this clip, they review Young Jeezy and Animal Collective and I can’t decide if it’s hilarious or completely insane. You may be surprised at Ann approving the rapper, as she points out the “intro” and “assassination” components, yet displaying her distaste for repetitious electronic riffs. Highlights are Joe’s implication of Young Jeezy’s “Black Dreams” putting shame to the African American race and his blatant plug for Girl Scout Cookies as they introduce Animal Collective’s “My Girls.” Watch the clip for yourself, and tell us what you think!
We’ve got a ton of new music videos, MP3′s and album news to help cap off your Thursday afternoon. With amazing new videos from Roger O’Donnell and Animal Collective and an MP3 of Diplo doing the official remix to Britney Spear’s song “Circus” Check it out:
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have finally revealed the name of their upcoming the album. In an announcement on their website the band revealed the album will reportedly be called “The Blitz” and will be released sometime this Spring. They also put up a pretty nice collage that is worth looking at. Check it out here.
Diplo did a remix of Britney Spears “Circus” which is reportedly the official remix of the song. Even if you’re not a Diplo or Spears fan you can probably get into this one. Check it out here.
Animal Collective has released a new video for their track “My Girls.” The waterific video features the band in underwater spaces, and is pretty cool to look at even if you’re not an Animal Collective fan. Check it our for yourself after the break:

It’s a new year and that means it’s time for brand new music! Pitchfork has already named Animal Collective’s Meriweather Post Pavillion the first great album of 2009. Does this fact make it hop on top of your list?
Some are highly anticipated because of the wait (Morrissey), some have been hyped up through serious tours (MSTRKRFT), and some are just exciting because you never know which album will include your favorite crass lyric in the future (Lily Allen)!
Take a look at some albums BeatCrave highly anticipates, and let us know what you think!
