It’s another week of new releases and it’s time to check out the best and worst in music. This week we’ve learned that distance really does make the heart grow fonder thanks to the Glasgow-based Belle and Sebastian. We may have felt that way about Illinois but we are definitely not feeling the Adz (whatever that means, Sufjan Stevens), and on another note, the British invasion is alive and well…

We just gave you some fun Mp3s to throw on your iPod but if the rest of the week seems a lot longer to you, don’t worry we’ve got your eyes covered too. We’ve got some great videos for you after the jump to keep you entertained at home, at your day job (secretly), on the commute home and everything else that may cause boredom. M.I.A., Belle & Sebastian, Best Coast and more after the jump!

The Vaselines formed in Glasgow during 1987 but they were put on a high pedestal for all music fanatics when Nirvana covered three of their songs and listed them as a major influence. They’ve also been known to include guest appearances by notable Belle & Sebastian members whose career started later in the 90s.
Now, out of nowhere, the band is about to go on tour in support of their first new album in 20 years. If we were to pick a band who was doing classic indie pop way before others came on to the scene and unfortunately dipped it the genre into Twee, The Vaselines would be it.

NME has broken the headlining lineup for Suffolk, England’s five-year-old Latitude Festival today, which seems lightly subpar when compared to the fest’s previous heavies (such as Arcade Fire, Nick Cave, Thom Yorke, Wilco and more). Florence + The Machine, Belle and Sebastian and Vampire Weekend will be the tent-pole acts for this year’s Latitude, with backing by Empire of the Sun, The Maccabees and Rodrigo y Gabriela. Keep in mind that this is simply an initial announcement, meaning that there will be more to come. That said, as far as initial announcements go… well, Belle and Sebastian are pretty good, right?

Without doubt, precious reader, you have heard of, and likely (at least) appreciate today’s BeatCrave Fav. Remarkably however, not everyone knows about this fantastic group of seven Scotsmen (and women). Since 1996, Belle and Sebastian have managed to ride that delicate line of indie genius and mainstream overkill. Their music has just enough whimsy and pop to be appreciated by a slew of demographics while simultaneously flying low enough on the radio airwaves to avoid over-exposure: the curse that kills some of the greatest indie acts.
With such enjoyably delicious songs as “White Collar Boy,” “The Fox in the Snow” and ”The Model” these Scots should have a place on everyone’s iPod. And, with such fantastic albums as “If You’re Feeling Sinister,” The Boy With the Arab Strap” and “Storytelling” in their repertoire, Belle and Sebastian deserve all of the accolades placed upon them and, of course, our very own BeatCrave Fav love.
